Foreground announce ‘More Akin To That Of An Interloper’, a newly commissioned text by Lizzie Lloyd on Sophie Hayes’ Storage

We are delighted to announce More Akin To That Of An Interloper, a newly commissioned text by Lizzie Lloyd on Sophie Hayes’ Storage series as part of the Document and Location programme.

The commissioned text More Akin To That Of An Interloper by Lizzie Lloyd is the second release in Foreground’s File Notes series, an occasional series of commissioned writing that will critically engage with different areas of Foreground’s programme. Lloyd’s text engages with the core ideas of Storage, a project by Document and Location member Sophie Hayes that explores the secret life and unintentional narratives of the non-public spaces of major museums across Europe.

“This absence of clear function and specific physical anchoring is surprisingly affecting; it leads Hayes’ images to behave like provisional dioramas of objects awaiting an audience, like the characters of Luigi Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author, one of whom describes himself as ‘an ‘unrealized’ character dramatically speaking’. These idiosyncratic moments of informal gatherings of museum items constitute what Hayes sees as the subconscious or ‘alter-ego of museological display’. Many of her images key into the tacit ambiguity of the role of the storage facilities she captures, her images extending the uncertainty about the degree to which the images we bear witness to are documentation or staged, practical or set up.”
